Introduction

Welcome to my blog! My name is Elliott Hinz, and I'm a second-year at UAF. While I've lived here in Fairbanks for a few years, I'm originally from the village of Fort Yukon. I'm majoring in business management, so I'm only doing this as a GER, but I hope to still enjoy the class. This is the first art class I'll have taken since elementary school, which I hope doesn't end up becoming an issue. Regardless, I hope to stay on top of this class and have a nice semester! Likewise, I hope everyone else doesn't end up feeling like this class is a drag or a repetitive "comment on 3 other peoples post's" class.

This is artwork done by an Alaskan artist, Ina Timling. I myself have never painted and wouldn't consider myself an artist, but I do enjoy going to art galleries. I especially appreciate local art, and my mom owns several of Timling's paintings, all of which I like. I really appreciate this painting in particular, as it reminds me a lot of the village. There's very little light pollution in the village, with the only lights on at night being the occasional streetlight. There were many times where I'd walk home from a friends house late at night, clearly seeing the northern lights and the sparse reflections of the moonlight on the snow. It was both a calm and lonely feeling, which I feel this painting does a wonderful job of reflecting.

For more of Timling's art, you can visit their Etsy page.

  2. Oooo! That's a print. I wonder what method? Woodblock or linoleum perhaps. Lack of light pollution. Sounds wonderful.

  3. Hi Elliott! That is a gorgeous image! We have some really amazing local artists in Alaska. I love the style of all of the prints in that artist’s shop. I wouldn’t worry too much about not having taken an art class in a while. I felt the same way last year when I took drawing, but it ended up being an enjoyable class; it is refreshing to change it up from the usual textbook and lecture.

  4. This picture reminds me a lot of the village as well. It is beautiful, the trees and the stars so visible without the street lights. I love how you described the street lights as light pollution; it immediately caught my attention, and I understood what you were saying! I've taken her class before, and reading other bloggers like yours has been very interesting. You will enjoy all the different perspectives from everyone! Have a great semester!

  5. Hi Elliott! I'm also studying business here at UAF. One of my favorite things to do in Alaska is visit the tourist locations, gift shops, and farmer's markets to look at the creations of local artists. I agree that this print captures the feeling of an Alaskan winter. It makes me feel like I've been standing right there before.

  6. Hey Elliott,
I really like the image you picked. It has a lot of art skills that I could think of when looking at it. When I looked at the image, it looks like sand art because of how the trees are made, but the stars looks like it was flicked with white paint all over it. Overall, this image is really pretty.

  7. Hi Elliot,
Is black and white your favorite type of art work? I love black and white for the simplistic side of it that still shows the scene well!

  8. Hello Elliott, this art piece is very incredible, with only using black and white the art piece is able to have depth and is able to make a beautiful composition. As someone who has taken an art class before and a music class, I actually enjoy this since I always find new songs / art to listen and look at. thank you for sharing and glad to have you in the class.
